Technical Guide + Problems Encountered

I have 5 different kinds of bookcases. 3 of which were copied and transformed into another spot, and 2 that were built specifically for a certain area. The shelves were placed using copy stamp nodes. The foreground books are made of 2 parts, the cover and the pages. When the books were still simple boxes, I copied them to the points of a clipped circle. Then I randomized the pscale to get some variation in size. I used the copy to points node in combination with the for each point node in order to receive metadata that would be used to add variation in color to the books. Point jitter was utilized to get even more variation between the front stacks of books. Rigid body dynamics were used to get the books to be stacked ontop of eachother.

The background books are simply beveled boxes. I used copy to points for easy control over how many books were to be generated and amount of space between them. The attribute randomize node was used to create variation in color and scale. A color node was used so that I could choose what specific colors I wanted randomly placed onto my books. Point jitter was utilized for even more variation.

My first challenge was creating the foreground books in a way that left no spaces in between the books, but still had variation. Initially I copied boxes onto the points of a tube so that I had both rows, however it didn’t work when running the simulation. The top heaviness made the whole stack fall. With help from the professor, my final version utilizes a clipped circle that is copied into the other locations.

I had an issue with texturing the foreground books, because I was unable to texture them the same way I textured the background books. The background books just needed an attribute randomize node and a color node. However, the foreground books were split into 2 different objects, so slapping one color on the entire thing was not going to work. The for each node had to be utilized so that I could use the metadata to randomize the color being used on the cover. I also decided to use that data to slightly change the color of the pages so they had some variation as well.

This is still a work in progress and I plan to work further on the lighting and making book covers.
