Week 3

Feedback from the mentors:

  • Add weight to the plant movements (bounce and secondary movements)

  • Timing is really important and can use improvement

  • Camera moves don't feel natural. Too much stop and start.

  • Vines coming from the headset feels strange. Have them recede to the table instead.

  • Start with a macro shot. Take away shot 1.

  • Shadow of the person in the last shot would be nice.

  • Show the person in the environment.

  • Check out the scene of Paddington in his prison cell to use as a reference.

  • Check out ETC Sap Woods work as a reference.

  • Color variations in flowers.

Here are the 2 references that they recommended we look at:

This week, I worked on getting each shot composited with plants that are currently in the scene.

For shots 1 and 2, I animated noise and slow flicker and merged it into the indirect emission. Then I used that as a mask for the glow.

before glow after glow

For each shot I tried to add depth of field. It worked better for some shots than others. For shot 3 specifically, I need to figure out if I'm going about it the right way. Ideally, I would want the foreground out of focus so that the focal point is the back table. For some reason I can't get the zdefocus node to just have that bit in the back in focus. It wants to have the bulk of the mid ground in focus too. In the depth map it doesn't look like there is as much depth information as there is in other renders, so maybe it is a render issue. I am having the same issue with shot 2. I will have to experiment with the file.

Shot 3

depth render

It lets me focus on the vine until a certain depth, then it puts the entire background in focus.

Shot 2 - it only seems to be picking up the leaves even when I adjust the gamma

depth render

For next week, I want to apply any feedback given on the compositing and incorporate any progress my teammates make.
