Week 7

  • Feb 24
  • 2 min read

Priorities

  • Render layers and lighting passes

  • Moon lighting and

  • More dynamic lighting - light realistically based on where the light sources would be in the room

  • Add more grass

  • Re-work the vines in shot 3 and 4 so the focal point is the headset

  • Re-work the vine texture so the vine is more of a light source that interacts with the ground around it

  • Re-work the flowers glow interaction with the grass

Week 7 continuity quilt compared to weeks 6 and 5:

One of my ongoing issues was the edges getting crunchy after applying depth of field. One of the other compositors in the class, Wren (https://wrenpellant.wixsite.com/demoreel/blog) informed me that Karma deals with depth of field differently and recommended setting the zdefocus math to depth instead of the default, far = 0.

far = 0 depth

This is the first week that the team rendered in layers, so we ran into many render issues. Many of the frames were missing because they could not be rendered on the farm. We also had to troubleshoot how to add lighting AOV's and phantom objects in the render. Due to this, shot 3 doesn't look it's best. Getting all the right render layers and AOV's for every shot is top priority going into next week.

This is my first time working with crypto mattes and I'm having a great time. The team was also able to get me different lighting passes as AOV's which was also really helpful. For the flowers I am using the "magical lighting" for the glow of the flower and the "moonlight" for the rest of the flower and the room.

I'd like to spend more time grading the ferns and the vine. I think both their colors match their surroundings a little too much right now.

Shot 3 Breakdown

Will have one in next weeks blog. Too many issues to really do much with the shot.
